Bandai Namco wants to trademark 'Finishing Move' phrase0 Comments
Bandai Namco is looking to trademark the Japanese term for "Finishing Move" — "Hissatsuwaza." This would give the publisher exclusive rights to the term, and Bandai Namco would also have the power to decide if other fighting games can use it. This probably won't be a problem for English versions of fighting games, but the phrase is definitely a common one in Japan. If Bandai Namco is given the rights to this phrase, it would have a huge affect on the Japanese fighting game community.
Jordan and Daniel of YouTube series The Know discussed the case at length on Reddit, comparing it to King's thwarted attempts to copyright the words "candy" and "saga," but taken to the next level. Other companies within the industry have attempted to trademark specific phrases before, and weren't met with success. It's likely that this will be the fate of Namco's case as well.
