Final Fantasy XIV director says Microsoft 'may not have the experience or understanding' needed to bring the game to Xbox One0 Comments
Final Fantasy fans with a knack for MMO gameplay have long been able to enjoy Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC, but the popular online RPG has been curiously absent from Xbox consoles since its release. Square Enix has explained that Microsoft's online infrastructure wasn't exactly conducive to cross-platform play, and they've stuck with that explanation through the years. However, now that Microsoft are making efforts to unify the Xbox One and Windows 10 experience, many might be lead to believe that the time has finally come for Final Fantasy XIV to make its Xbox One debut.
Apparently that isn't quite the case. Reports indicate that there is a hangup regarding the possibility of cross-platform gameplay between PC and Xbox One; according to Naoki Yoshida, the game's director, Microsoft's regulations regarding cross-platform play exhibit a lack of the "understanding and experience" needed to host a massively-multiplayer online game.
"When our team reviewed the regulations that are associated with [cross-platform play], we realized that Microsoft may not have the experience or understanding of running an MMORPG as an online game genre just yet," Yoshida told Polygon.
This isn't to say that the game will never surface on the Xbox One; it's just that there are obstacles to overcome first, and Square Enix need more leeway from Microsoft. Specifically, Yoshida said Square Enix need Microsoft to drop some of their regulations.
"The Final Fantasy 14 team has fed back to Microsoft that there are certain elements of its regulations that we would have to consider waived," Yoshida said. "We're waiting on Microsoft's response for that, but we are having discussions."
Despite the possibility of the game coming to a new system, some are worried that Square Enix may soon drop support for the oldest system in the lineup — the PlayStation 3. Yoshida assuaged those concerns, however, by confirming that the Final Fantasy XIV team will "continue to fully support the PS3 through the 3.x series of patches."
