Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ confirmed for North America0 Comments
Kingdom Hearts fans are a pretty patient bunch. With Kingdom Hearts 3 still looming after all this time, Square Enix have revealed that a smartphone spinoff is heading to North America. So, what exactly is this game and when does it take place in the massive Kingdom Hearts timeline?
Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ takes place at the very start of the series. This means it occurs prior to anything else we've seen so far in the narrative — before the Keyblade War began. Of course, this means there will be new characters. One in particular is your sidekick cat named Chirithy. Right now, the only brand new world is Daybreak Town, but it's possible future new towns could be added as the game progresses.
As a mobile release, Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ will feature simplified gameplay. There are still battles, of course, but the goal is to receive medals from them. You're going to want to collect as many medals as possible, as well as compete against other players via live events. The art style features 2D chibi characters similar to Square Enix's Theatrhythm game series.
Those who play this release will get a leg up in regards to Kingdom Hearts lore. This is because the game ties into Kingdom Hearts 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue. In that release there's a side story titled Unchained χ - Back Cover, which is directly related to the smartphone app. Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ is set to launch on both Android and iOS on April 7.
