Phil Spencer responds to Xbox and PC cross-play backlash0 Comments
Microsoft has been taking some serious heat from fans and industry colleagues alike, but the company has yet to respond to any of these qualms. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has finally broken his silence in an interview with Game Informer, and he's confident that even his strongest detractor will eventually see the light.
In response to Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney's comments on Xbox's new ecosystem, Spencer was quick to praise his colleague. "He has a real principled view on how the games industry and frankly, overall Windows ecosystem, works, and I never worry that he is saying something for his own competitive reasons – it’s just what Tim really believes," Spencer says. "I’m not saying we always believe the same thing, but the motivations behind his beliefs have never been a question for me. I’ll always listen to him."
However, Spencer also says that what Sweeney was asking for in his public criticism was already a part of Spencer's plans, mentioning that Sweeney "wanted a public statement about Windows being an open development platform," while also asserting that Microsoft's executive VP of Windows and Devices Terry Myerson "said that right at the beginning."
This interiew won't silence all of the critics, but I appreciate Spencer coming out and addressing the concerns head on — even if he is a little late. I wish more companies would be as forthcoming with their faithful consumers, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
