Psyonix VP says PS4/Xbox One cross-play is 'inevitable'0 Comments
It's safe to say that Rocket League is a phenomenon, with the game continually spreading its soccer-with-cars goodness across the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Cross-play between the PC and Xbox One recently became possible once Microsoft signed off on it, leaving the decision to tear down the final barriers between consoles entirely up to Sony. And, according to Psyonix vice president Jeremy Dunham, Sony's decision to eventually allow for cross-platform play is "inevitable."
In an interview with IGN, Dunham spoke toward the already-established means that will allow PlayStation 4 users to play Rocket League with other platforms, saying that Psyonix can have the functionality up and running in very little time.
"[We're] literally at the point where all we need is the go-ahead on the Sony side and we can, in less than a business day, turn it on and have it up and working no problem," Dunham said, adding that it would "literally take a few hours."
Dunham also commented on how a totally interconnected game structure would help the team streamline major changes and updates to Rocket League, making cross-play a major advantage from a developer's perspective. The benefits go beyond Rocket League, too, as Dunham added that that all games could ultimately benefit from cross-network compatibility between the two rival companies.
"Man, from our vantage point just imagine if we were cross-network on all platforms, how well that could be received and not only how that could help our game, but how that could help communities for all games, everywhere," Dunham said. "I do think — and most of our development staff feels this way as well — that eventually the industry as a whole is going to move that direction, hopefully sooner rather than later. We think that it's inevitable — or at least we hope so."
He's certainly not the only one who thinks so. Many if not most gamers have shown interest in an open infrastructure through which they could connect with their friends of separate console allegiances. Whether or not such a shift is inevitable remains to be seen, but it certainly makes a lot of sense.
