Sony and Cygames teaming up for PlayStation VR Games Contest0 Comments
A Japanese event for developers who focus on the Unity game engine has unearthed an interesting new idea: Sony and Cygames have announced the PlayStation VR Game Contest, a "game jam" of sorts where teams of developers will compete in making the next great VR game.
No particular contest details have been announced, only that it is coming and that more details will be released via Sony, Cygames, and Unity's Twitter feed "at a later date." The judges for the event have also been confirmed, with Unity Technologies Japan senior manager Hiroki Oomae, Cygames company director Eitoshi Ashihara, and Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida named for the decision process.
Game development challenges always seem to bring out the best in some developers, but focusing on virtual reality is a risky endeavor. I feel like VR games are not made quickly, so this contest could span years before a winner is decided...or this could be the unlikely source of what will become the greatest VR game ever launched to the public. Either way, there's some new VR games coming down the pike via a Sony-judged contest, so hopefully PlayStation VR's launch lineup will include some of them in October.
