Yacht Club Games releases slew of Shovel Knight statistics celebrating 1 million copies sold0 Comments
In news that won't likely surprise anyone who has played the title, Yacht Club Games' 2015 platformer Shovel Knight has surpassed one million copies sold. Actually, Yacht Club Games passed the one million figure sold across all platforms back in December, but as of February the game achieved one million sales solely through digital storefronts.
In a post made to the Yacht Club Games website, the developer announced the news, as well as a 33% discount on the title that will run at various times on various digital marketplaces. Essentially, that brings the price of the game down to 10 bucks for the Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, Xbox One, Steam, GOG, the Humble Store, and even the Amazon Fire TV.
That's all well and good — it's actually a fantastic deal for a fantastically fun game — but what's more interesting is that Yacht Club have also shared some sales figures for Shovel Knight, the results of which are pretty interesting. Among all services that sell the game, Steam dominates, accounting for 32% of the overall sales. Curiously, the next highest seller is the Nintendo 3DS, accounting for 29% of sales. The PlayStation 4 lags relatively far behind with just 10%, while only 1% are represented by the Humble Bundle store.
Even more interesting are some of the play statistics. Roughly a third of the users who played the game (32%) have actually beaten it, and only 2% have managed to finish a New Game + playthrough. As someone who eagerly devoured the title, I found the final castle in New Game + to be extremely challenging, so maybe that should come as no surprise.
There are loads more statistics available, including sales breakdowns by region, by retailer, and even statistics for which physical copies of the game sold most. There are also lengthy examinations into things like the Plague of Shadows expansion (which reportedly cost $1 million to develop) and amiibo sales numbers. All in all a very interesting read, and Shovel Knight fans can find the full scoop over on the Yacht Club Games website.
